The Bangladeshi taka (৳) was introduced after Bangladesh's independence in 1971, replacing the former Pakistani rupee. 'Taka' derives from a Sanskrit-rooted Bengali word for 'coin.'
Six denominations circulate: ৳10, ৳20, ৳50, ৳100, ৳500, and ৳1,000, featuring independence hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and national monuments.
Even in big cities like Dhaka, cash still accounts for the bulk of everyday payments, so carrying plenty of small bills tends to be far more convenient than relying on cards. Exchange at a licensed bank or money changer, and keep the receipt — it can help if you want to convert leftover taka back before leaving. Traffic can be heavy in many cities, so having small bills ready for rickshaw or CNG (auto-rickshaw) fares is worth doing in advance.
