Brunei Dollar (BND)

Brunei Dollar · B$ · Official currency of Brunei

History

The Brunei dollar (B$) was introduced in 1967 after separating from the shared Malaya-and-British-Borneo currency system also used by Singapore and Malaysia. An agreement keeping it interchangeable at par with the Singapore dollar remains in effect today.

Banknote Denominations

Various denominations circulate, including $1, $5, $10, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000, featuring Brunei's royal emblem and the Sultan's portrait.

Traveler Tips

The Brunei dollar and Singapore dollar are pegged at par by treaty, and in practice Singapore dollars are readily accepted in Brunei, though the reverse isn't always guaranteed elsewhere. As a Muslim-majority country, most shops close on Friday afternoons for prayers, so it's worth planning currency exchange and shopping around that schedule. With smaller-scale tourism infrastructure, cash still comes in handy more often than cards.
