Bolivian Boliviano · Bs · Official currency of Bolivia
The Bolivian boliviano (Bs) was introduced in 1987 to address severe inflation, replacing the former peso. Its name honors independence hero Simón Bolívar.
Five denominations circulate: Bs10, Bs20, Bs50, Bs100, and Bs200, featuring historical figures and natural heritage of Bolivia.
In high-altitude tourist destinations like La Paz and Uyuni, card payment infrastructure is limited, so cash is essential. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer in the city is the safer option; some exchange offices also handle US dollars, but paying in bolivianos tends to be more widely accepted. Small bills are useful for markets and local transport fares, so it's worth having plenty on hand.
