The Brazilian real (R$) was introduced in 1994 as part of the 'Plano Real' economic reform aimed at taming severe inflation. Since then, it has maintained price stability and become a symbol of Brazil's economy.
Seven denominations circulate: R$2, R$5, R$10, R$20, R$50, R$100, and R$200, all made of polymer. Every note features native Brazilian flora and fauna on the reverse.
Card and mobile payments (like Pix) are extremely widespread, making it easy to get around big cities without cash. That said, cash is still useful at beach vendors and small shops, so it's worth keeping some small bills. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer in the city usually gets a better rate than at the airport.
