The Dominican peso (RD$) was introduced after independence from Haiti in 1844, carrying over the currency system from the Spanish colonial era.
Six denominations circulate: RD$50, RD$100, RD$200, RD$500, RD$1,000, and RD$2,000, featuring Dominican independence heroes and historical events.
In resort areas like Punta Cana, US dollars are commonly accepted, but local shops and public transportation typically require peso cash. Exchanging at a bank or licensed exchange office (casa de cambio) in the city usually gets a better rate than at the airport. It's convenient to keep small peso bills on hand for tipping at resorts and restaurants.
