The Algerian dinar (DA) was introduced in 1964, replacing the Algerian franc used during French colonial rule. The name 'dinar' traces back to the ancient Roman denarius.
Four denominations circulate: DA200, DA500, DA1,000, and DA2,000, featuring Algerian historical sites and symbols related to independence.
The Algerian dinar is also subject to exchange and export restrictions, making it hard to obtain before arrival, so exchanging at a licensed bank after landing is standard. Card payment infrastructure is limited in many areas, so it's safer to plan your trip around cash. Black-market exchange may look attractive on rate, but it carries legal risk and isn't recommended.
