The Ethiopian birr (Br) reflects Ethiopia's history as one of the few African nations never colonized, maintaining its own currency tradition. It was reorganized into its current name and system in 1976.
Various denominations circulate, including Br1, Br5, Br10, Br50, Br100, and Br200, featuring Ethiopia's agriculture and cultural heritage.
Exchanging at a licensed bank or money changer is the safer route, and outside major cities card payments are rarely accepted, so it's important to carry enough cash. Because the informal rate can differ from the official one, using official channels is the safer choice. Small bills come in handy for local transport and markets, so it's worth keeping a good supply.
