The Fijian dollar ($) was introduced in 1969 on a decimal system, replacing the earlier Fijian pound. As a Commonwealth nation, historical ties to the British royal family are still reflected in its note designs.
Five denominations circulate: $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, featuring Fiji's coral reefs, wildlife, and other natural heritage.
Card payments are widely used at resorts, but cash is essential at local markets and on smaller islands. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer in the city usually gets a better rate than at the airport. Small bills come in handy often for local buses and markets, so it's worth keeping a good stock.
