The Mongolian tögrög (₮) was introduced in 1925 after the founding of the Mongolian People's Republic; 'tögrög' means 'round' in Mongolian.
Five denominations circulate: ₮500, ₮1,000, ₮5,000, ₮10,000, and ₮20,000, with higher denominations all featuring a portrait of Genghis Khan, founder of the Mongol nation.
Card payments are increasingly common in central Ulaanbaatar, but cash is essential once you head out to the steppe or smaller towns. Exchanging at a city bank or licensed money changer is safer and usually offers a better rate than at the airport. Higher denominations (₮10,000 and ₮20,000) all share the Genghis Khan portrait, so it's worth getting in the habit of checking the anti-counterfeit watermark.
