The Nigerian naira (₦) was introduced in 1973, replacing the former Nigerian pound. Its name is a coined abbreviation of 'Nigeria.'
Five denominations circulate: ₦50, ₦100, ₦200, ₦500, and ₦1,000, featuring Nigeria's independence heroes and historical events.
Card and mobile payments are spreading quickly in cities like Lagos, but cash still dominates many transactions, and ATM withdrawal limits tend to be low. Exchanging at a licensed bank or money changer is the safer option; street exchange carries a higher risk of counterfeit notes or scams. Carrying plenty of small bills is convenient for local transport and small purchases.
