The Norwegian krone (kr) was introduced in 1875 with the formation of the Scandinavian Monetary Union. Although the union later dissolved, the name and decimal system have remained in use.
Five denominations circulate: kr50, kr100, kr200, kr500, and kr1,000, featuring abstract designs inspired by Norway's maritime and seafaring history.
Like other Nordic countries, Norway relies heavily on card and mobile payments (like Vipps), so you'll rarely need cash. Prices tend to run high, so it's worth budgeting generously, and while rare, a few remote spots or small kiosks may not take cards, so a little cash on hand offers peace of mind. In areas with a lot of outdoor activity, like fjord tours, it's worth checking payment options in advance.
