The Nepalese rupee (Rs) was standardized in 1932 and has remained in use since, with its exchange rate effectively pegged to the Indian rupee.
Seven denominations circulate: Rs5, Rs10, Rs20, Rs50, Rs100, Rs500, and Rs1,000, featuring the Himalayas along with Nepal's native animals and cultural heritage.
The Nepalese rupee is effectively pegged to the Indian rupee, and Indian rupees do circulate in parts of Nepal, though many shops won't accept high-denomination ₹500 and ₹1,000 Indian notes. Card payments are essentially unavailable in mountain areas and along trekking routes, so it's important to carry enough cash before setting out. Exchanging at a licensed money changer in central Kathmandu usually gets a better rate than at the airport.
