The New Zealand dollar ($) was introduced in 1967 on a decimal system, replacing the earlier New Zealand pound. Between 2015 and 2016, notes were fully converted to more counterfeit-resistant polymer material.
Five denominations circulate: $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, all made of polymer, featuring native New Zealand bird species on the reverse.
New Zealand also has strong card payment adoption, making it easy to get around without cash. That said, small kiosks in remote hiking and camping areas may not take cards, so it's worth keeping some cash on hand. Polymer notes are durable but don't hold up well to heat, so store them with care.
