The Philippine peso (₱) traces its origins to the peso system used during Spanish colonial rule. The current 'New Generation Currency' series has been gradually introduced since 2010.
Six denominations circulate: ₱20, ₱50, ₱100, ₱200, ₱500, and ₱1,000, featuring historical Filipino figures along with the country's natural and cultural heritage. Polymer versions have recently been issued alongside paper notes.
In big cities like Manila, card and mobile payments (like GCash) are spreading quickly, but cash is still essential in the provinces and at small shops. Exchanging at a bank or a licensed money changer in the city generally gets a better rate than at the airport. Small bills are especially handy for paying jeepney or tricycle fares.
