The Pakistani rupee (₨) was introduced after the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, carrying over the former Indian rupee system.
Seven denominations circulate: ₨10, ₨20, ₨50, ₨100, ₨500, ₨1,000, and ₨5,000, all featuring a portrait of founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah on the front.
Exchanging at a licensed exchange company or bank is safer than street money changers, which carry a higher risk of counterfeit notes or unfavorable rates. Outside major cities, card payment infrastructure is limited, so cash — especially small bills — is essential. Given how much exchange rates can fluctuate, it's often worth changing money in smaller amounts as you go rather than all at once.
