The Solomon Islands dollar ($) was introduced in 1977 as an independent currency, replacing the earlier use of the Australian dollar.
Five denominations circulate: $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, featuring the Solomon Islands' traditional culture and natural landscapes.
Card payment infrastructure is limited, so outside Honiara cash is essential. Exchanging at a bank in the city is the safer option and usually offers a better rate than at the airport. Given the limited travel infrastructure in many areas, it's wise to carry enough cash in advance.
