The Tunisian dinar (DT) was introduced in 1960, replacing the Tunisian franc used during French colonial rule. It's considered one of the highest-valued currency units in the world.
Four denominations circulate: DT5, DT10, DT20, and DT50, featuring historical Tunisian figures and cultural heritage.
The Tunisian dinar is also subject to export restrictions, so it's difficult to obtain abroad — exchanging at the local airport or a bank after arrival is standard. Card payments are increasingly common at tourist spots, but cash is needed at local markets and small shops. Converting leftover dinars back is restricted on departure, so it's best to exchange only what you expect to use.
