Tongan Paʻanga · T$ · Official currency of Tonga
The Tongan paʻanga (T$) was introduced in 1967, replacing the earlier pound-based system. Reflecting Tonga's history as one of the few Pacific island nations never colonized and still a monarchy, its notes feature the king's portrait.
Various denominations circulate, including T$1, T$2, T$5, T$10, T$20, T$50, and T$100, featuring the Tongan king's portrait and royal symbols.
Card payment infrastructure is limited, so cash is essential, and small shops may run short on change, so it's worth carrying small bills. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer is the safer route, and since the notes carry the king's portrait, they're treated with a degree of respect worth being mindful of.
