The Ukrainian hryvnia (₴) revives a currency name used in medieval Kyivan Rus. It was introduced in 1996 as Ukraine moved away from the former Soviet ruble system.
Six denominations circulate: ₴20, ₴50, ₴100, ₴200, ₴500, and ₴1,000, featuring figures and cultural heritage from Ukrainian history.
Given how quickly exchange rates and on-the-ground conditions can change, it's especially important to check the latest information before visiting. Card and mobile payments are widely used in major cities, but it's safer to carry some cash as a backup in case of power outages or network disruptions. Exchange at a licensed bank or money changer, and avoid informal street exchange of unclear origin.
