The Uruguayan peso ($U) was introduced in 1993 through a currency reform, replacing the former nuevo peso.
Various denominations circulate, including $U20, $U50, $U100, $U200, $U500, $U1,000, and $U2,000, featuring historical Uruguayan figures and cultural heritage.
Uruguay tends to have relatively stable prices for South America, though overall costs of living run a bit higher. Card payments are widely used in cities, but cash is still useful in smaller towns and beach resorts. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer in the city usually gets a better rate than at the airport.
