The Vanuatu vatu (VT) was introduced in 1981 after independence from joint British-French rule. It's one of the few currencies with no subunit at all.
Various denominations circulate, including VT200, VT500, VT1,000, VT5,000, and VT10,000, featuring Vanuatu's traditional culture and natural landscapes.
Card payments are mostly usable in central Port Vila, while cash is essential on the outer islands. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer is the safer option, and since there's no subunit, all amounts are whole numbers, which actually makes the math a bit simpler.
