The Samoan tālā ($) was introduced in 1967, replacing the earlier pound-based system. 'Tālā' is a Samoan adaptation of the English word 'dollar.'
Various denominations circulate, including $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, featuring Samoa's traditional culture and natural heritage.
Card payments are mostly usable in central Apia, while cash is essential in smaller villages and markets. Exchanging at a bank or licensed money changer is the safer option, and carrying plenty of small bills comes in handy for local buses and markets.
